ORGANIC LIQUID STIMULATOR ENHANCES BIOLOGICAL REMEDIATION
THE GROWING NEED FOR BIOREMEDIATION
A major concern in the environment today is the contamination from waste dumps and
effluent water systems. These above ground storage systems tend to develop thick surface
crusts with heavy settling of solids at the bottom, commonly producing foul odours. The
cause of these waste problems is simple. Unstable mixtures suffocate the natural
biological activities in the pond. Healthy bacterial organisms that normally convert the
waste into usable nutrients die from "overload". The solution to a healthy waste
effluent system is to bring the natural microbial activity back into balance.
"Bioremediation" is the application of biological treatment to the cleanup of
unwanted contaminants. It incorporates the use of microorganisms such as bacteria and
fungi to biodegrade contaminating products. Bioremediation is cost effective,
environmentally sound, and increasingly the preferred choice of remedial technology for
cleanup operations.
SANJIBAN MICROACTIVE
Sanjiban MicroActive is a liquid stimulator developed from a complex fermentation process.
Easy-to-apply, non-toxic, completely safe and 100% natural, MicroActive is not a bacterial
culture or an odour-masker, but an organic extract enriched with natural enzymes that
activates and rapidly multiplies healthy organisms already present in the effluent system.
As these microrganisms go to work to biodegrade the waste, the digestive process changes
from anaerobic to aerobic, which quickly reduces offensive odours. Sanjiban MicroActive
does not contain any live organisms or bacteria.
The Sanjiban Bio- remediation method is to
"supercharge" the colonies of microbes that already exist in the effluent and
are working to break down the waste materials. Sanjiban produces larger amounts of
self-generating dissolved and free oxygen that inhibits odour-causing anaerobic activity.
Properly applied, it is nature's own odour-neutralization process recreated and captured
in a balanced micro-ecosystem. However, MicroActive will also stimulate and expand
lab-cultured bacterial colonies which may be introduced into the waste ponds to enhance
biological remediation. Along with reducing odours and breaking up crusts and solids, the
biological activity stimulated by MicroActive also helps the waste retain more nutrient
value.
There is a marked increase in organic matter as well as in
macro and micronutrients. This is a direct result of a healthy and balanced microbial
activity, with less of nutrient waste as a result of reduced loss in gases, settling and
crusting. Often, the value of the retained nutrients more than compensates for MicroActive
treatment. The essence of the Sanjiban MicroActive bio-remediation system is a synergistic
action of insitu bio-augmentation and natural enzyme-based catalytic breakdown of organic
wastes in effluent. This synergism will regenerate the natural eutrophic process in
wastewaters. Sanjiban MicroActive aims to provide a natural solution to effluent treatment
to enable the total return of wastewaters to life-supporting oxygenated water systems fit
for farming and agriculture.

SANJIBAN MICROACTIVE IN SEWAGE TREATMENT
Sanjiban MicroActive is a liquid stimulator developed from a complex fermentation process.
It is composed of natural extracts and enzymes that activate and rapidly multiply healthy
microorganisms already present in the activated sludge in the sewage treatment plant. As
these microorganisms go to work to biodegrade the pollutants in the effluent, the
reduction in COD, BOD, nitrogen and phosphorous will increase rapidly. Sanjiban
MicroActive produces large amounts of self-generating dissolved and free oxygen that help
in reactivating the return sludge in sewage treatment plants.
ADVANTAGES OF USING SANJIBAN MICROACTIVE IN SEWAGE
TREATMENT PLANT:
There are a number of advantages of using Sanjiban MicroActive in sewage treatment plants.
1. Sanjiban MicroActive "supercharges" the colonies of
microbes that already exist in activated sludge and increases the rate of breakdown of the
organic waste, i.e. BOD & COD in sewage treatment.
2. It improves the quality of biological floc and helps in producing
more number of flocs. The type of sludge generated markedly increases its adsorptive
properties.
3. Sanjiban MicroActive encourages the growth of beneficial bacteria,
smaller in size, and produces denser flocs. The dense flocs settle at a faster rate in the
treated water and generate lesser volume of sludge.
4. Sanjiban MicroActive discourages the growth of filamentous bacteria
and reduces chances of bulking of sludge.
5. Use of Sanjiban MicroActive continuously reactivates and stabilizes
the returned sludge, as it produces large amounts of self-generating dissolved and free
oxygen. Thus the activated sludge process is modified to "contact stabilization"
i.e., process modification of activated sludge process to increase the capacity of
treatment as compared to conventional plug flow. Use of Sanjiban MicroActive helps to
modify existing conventional process at zero cost and increases the capacity of treatment.
Application Method and Dosage:
Sanjiban MicroActive is to be introduced into the "return sludge point" on Day 1
@ 2 Litres MicroActive concentrate per mld, (to be diluted 1:9 with water), as a shock
dosage to kick start the remediation process. Repeat the same dosage on Day 4. Thereafter,
from Day 7 onwards, maintenance dosage of 333 ml./mld of MicroActive is to be applied
daily. Specific proprietary mix of microbial cultures blended with natural enzymes to
further enhance bio-remediation is recommended.
SANJIBAN MICROACTIVE IN MANURE COMPOSTING PITS
Sanjiban MicroActive is enriched with natural enzymes that activate and rapidly multiply
the healthy micro-organisms that already exist in the manure composting pit. As these
micro- organisms go to work to biodegrade the waste, the digestive process in the compost
pit changes from anaerobic to aerobic, which quickly reduces offensive odours and destroys
pathogenic organisms. The synergistic action of bioaugmentation and enzymatic catalysis
breaks down even the toughest of animal and plant wastes into a healthy, enriched,
nutrient-balanced compost. Sanjiban MicroActive produces large amounts of self-generating
dissolved and free oxygen, which accomplishes aeration without turning the compost pit
either manually or mechanically, thus saving both labour and energy. The recycling of
organic matter into humus, if not managed correctly, can limit fresh plant growth. Slow
and incomplete organic matter recycling reduces nitrogen availability and increases the
number of disease causing pathogens.
Sanjiban MicroActive helps in killing disease-causing
organisms more efficiently during composting. The destruction is brought about by the
combined action of high temperature (aerobic condition), exhaustion of nutrients
(bioaugmentation of microbial population) as well as natural antibiosis. The massive
microbial activity stimulated by Sanjiban MicroActive effectively carries out
bio-remediation of purifying organic matter, thereby preventing flies and mosquitoes from
breeding in the compost pit. The biological activity stimulated by Sanjiban MicroActive
helps the compost retain more nutrient value and prevent losses due to leaching or escape
of gases. There is a marked increase in organic matter as well as micronutrients. The
beneficial soil bacteria and fungi produce gums and hyphae that glue and bind soil
particles together to form improved aggregate. Complete composting frees up nitrogen for
fresh growth and prevents negative bacteria production.
Sanjiban MicroActive, through a natural probiotic action,
revitalises and rejuvenates the soil and plant system.
Application Method and Dosage
The most effective application method is to spray or sprinkle Sanjiban MicroActive layer
by layer as the compost pit is built up. Alternatively, a number of vertical holes can be
made in the manure pit and MicroActive poured in after dilution. Compost heaps should be
covered with straw or plant-wastes to retain moisture. A normal dosage would be a single
application of 100 ml.Sanjiban MicroActive per tonne of manure (diluted 1:9 with water to
make a one litre solution).Composting should be complete in 30-45 days, dependent on
ambient temperature and climatic conditions.
SANJIBAN MICROACTIVE FOR BIOREMEDIATION
EUTROPHICATION OF NATRUAL WATER BODIES (LAGOONS)
A major concern in environment management is contamination from sewage and industrial
effluent water of natural water bodies (lagoons). When sewage or industrial effluents feed
the water bodies with pollutants and excessive phosphorus and nitrogen, there is over
fertilization or eutrophication leading to algal bloom. This increased biomass may deplete
the limited oxygen during the night, or when the sky is overcast for several days, and
result in the death of the biomass in water bodies. Aquatic microorganisms are the natural
work force to clean up water bodies when there is accidental input of pollutants. They
carry out a bio-remediation action. Large-scale urbanization and industrialization has
resulted in discharge of an immense amount of waste in natural water bodies.
This waste creates pollution in water bodies due to its low
assimilative capacity. If a pre-positioned primary treatment unit can solve this problem,
i.e., screen and grit chamber, then a constructed wetland system can be established to
remove harmful organic compounds efficiently. However, applying Sanjiban MicroActive can
directly increase the assimilative capacity of natural water bodies. Bio-remediation using
Sanjiban MicroActive is cost effective, environmentally sound and the preferred choice of
remedial technology for clean up operation of water bodies (lagoons).
ADVANTAGES OF USING SANJIBAN MICROACTIVE :
Sanjiban MicroActive is a liquid stimulator, enriched with natural enzymes that activates
and rapidly multiplies healthy microorganisms in water bodies. As these microorganisms go
to work to biodegrade the waste, the degradation process in the water bodies is
accelerated, which quickly reduces pollutant loads. Sanjiban Bio-remediation method is to
"supercharge" the colonies of microbes that already exist in water bodies and
are working to breakdown the waste materials. Microactive produces large amounts of
self-generating dissolved and free oxygen that increases dissolved oxygen throughout the
water body upto the bottom layer. Properly applied, it accelerates the natural process of
degradation and develops a balanced micro-ecosystem. MicroActive will also stimulate and
expand lab-cultured bacterial colonies, which may be introduced into the waste ponds to
enhance biological remediation.
ECOLOGICAL SYSTEMS (ECO-POND) FOR SUSTAINABLE
MANAGEMENT:
Sanjiban MicroActive should be applied periodically for regular maintenance of the pond.
Additionally, an ecological system formed through a multi-purpose utilization of the pond
including growing aquatic plants, fish farming and duck/geese raising, which together with
microorganisms, plankton and benthos constitute various food chains, and form a whole food
web, can thus be established. In this system not only do bacteria and fungi act as
decomposers, and algae and other aquatic plants as producers as in the conventional ponds,
but also zooplankton, shrimp, clams and snails combine to constitute the ecopond system.
In some well- designed and performing Eco-pond systems under warm climatic conditions, the
typical removal efficiencies for various pollutants that have been achieved are: TSS
80-95%, BOD 85-98%, COD 80-93%, TKN 70-80%, NH4-N 85-95%, Phosphorus 90-95% and E coil
bacteria 99%. Further, produce of 5000-6000 kg/ha of fish and 500-1000 kg/ha of shrimps
can also be harvested.
APPLICATION METHOD AND DOSAGE:
To treat polluted water-bodies, an initial intensive shock treatment will usually be
required. To accomplish this, Sanjiban MicroActive should first be sprayed over the
treatment area at a rate of 10 litres of MicroActive concentrate (in a 1:9 dilution with
water to make 100 litres solution) over an area 1000 sq.m. It is desirable to allow
MicroActive to exist at the surface of the water- body as long as possible. After the
surface treatment is completed, Sanjiban Microactive should be introduced evenly into the
bottom layer of the pond at the same dosage rate of 10 litres MicroActive concentrate (to
be diluted as above) in the same 1000 sq.m. area. With time, the eutrophic process will
penetrate deeper, but initially, most of remedial action will be through surface layers,
and therefore this deeper treatment is very effective.
Repeat this initial shock dosage again in 15 days, both on
the surface as well as at the bottom of the pond. Thereafter, Sanjiban MicroActive should
be applied once every 15 days, calculated at the rate of 20 litres concentrate (to be
diluted as above) for every 10,000 sq.m. of water-body area. Application should preferably
be at the influent ingress point, by continuous trickling method. Or else, the dosage can
be sprayed over the pond water body. To enhance biological remediation, specific aquatic
plants and fishes could also be introduced. (The total quantity of Sanjiban MicroActive
required to treat a water body area of say 10,000 sq.m. will therefore be 200 litres for
the initial shock treatment and thereafter 40 litres per month as a sustainable management
dosage.)
SANJIBAN BIO-REMEDIATION IN BIOSALINE AGRICULTURE
A large percentage of mankind lives in coastal communities, within 50 kms. of the sea.
Additionally, at certain periods of a year, there is a marked increase in population in
these areas due to tourist inflow, creating added stress on environmental resources.
Two-thirds of planet earth is covered by seawater, containing 3-5% of salts, mostly sodium
chloride. Coastal communities are often forced to resort to brackish water irrigation to
grow agricultural crops for their livelihood.
BIOSALINE AGRICULTURE
The success of saline irrigation in agriculture rests to a high degree on the management
of the salt concentration in soil water. This is maintained by flushing the planted
furrows periodically with seawater, much in simulation of the tidal inundation, which
occurs in waves at the seashore. The optimal frequency of such inundation needs to be
determined from site to site. It will differ depending on rainfall occurrence, frequency,
seasonality, as well as the level of residual moisture in soil taking into account the
local levels of evapotransportation. One of the relatively more successful methods
employed in Biosaline Agriculture is the cyclic use of brackish water alternated with
canal water irrigation.
Brackish water is used throughout the first season growing
a salt-tolerant crop. The injurious effects do not curtail the yield of the first crop and
the salt residues are washed out when the second crop is grown with canal water
irrigation. The second crop needs to be a less salt-tolerant variety. This crop management
strategy is cost-effective, practical and technically sound. Full crop water requirements
are met, the cropping intensity is increased and the negative effects of brackish water
are neutralised.
SANJIBAN IN BIOSALINE AGRICULTURE
Organic farming practices and manurial inputs can make a marked difference in Biosaline
Agriculture. Application of farmyard manure, covering the soil with rice straw or other
crop residues, growing green manure crops, introduction of haliophytic plants which will
absorb the excess salts and heavy metals in the soil, are methods that will reduce salt
stress in the soil, promote bacterial life and increase soil fertility. Sanjiban
Bio-Active Composter is a natural organic biological stimulator derived through a complex
biocatalyst fermentation process. Its unique mode of action activates and multiplies the
beneficial waste-digesting microbes that are already present in the crop residues.
Bio-Active Composter is also fortified with natural enzymes that successfully break down
even the toughest of animal and plant wastes into a healthy, enriched, nutrient-balanced
compost.
SANJIBAN BIO-ACTIVE COMPOSTER
Sanjiban Bio-Active Composter should be applied at the time of rice straw/crop residue
covering. It will speedily decompose organic matter to create humus in the soil and will
also dramatically increase the microbial life. Powerful natural enzymes in Bio-Active
Composter decompose the crop residues into available food for microbial life and plants.
(Application dosage 20 litres per acre diluted 1:9 with water).
SANJIBAN ROOT ZONE
Sanjiban Root Zone is a natural organic microbial growth stimulant that biologically
activates the soil. This unique formulation is a liquid concentrate derived through a
complex biocatalyst process. Its primary action is to multiply the soil's native microbes
and bacteria and stimulate activity in the rhizosphere. This in turn breaks down available
organic matter as well as releases inorganic elements bonded in the soil, resulting in a
larger availability of organic acids, vitamins, growth regulators, enzymes and
micro-nutrients. The large increase in microbial activity leads to a better-aerated soil,
increased penetration of water and oxygen, and a reduction in compaction and soil
alkanity.
The increase in oxygen at the molecular level coupled with
better soil moisture retention, relieves stress and tends to balance soil pH. Sanjiban
Root Zone should be applied to soil once a month throughout the crop cycle, @ 20
litres concentrate per acre diluted 1:9 with water. To further enhance effective
bio-remediation, scientific soil analysis reports will help determine specific
custom-cultured natural microbial strains and specific natural enzymes which can then be
innoculated into the soils to accelerate the remediation process. Sanjiban, through a
probiotic action, helps populate beneficial micro-organisms in the soil to establish a
healthy soil-plant microbiology. Sanjiban works in the soil so that the soil works better,
naturally.
SANJIBAN MICROACTIVE BIO-REMEDIATION OF HYDROCARBON
CONTAMINATION
Septic wastes from storage lagoons in petroleum refinery operations, tank-bottom sludges,
and hydrocarbon-contaminated soils present serious difficulties in handling and disposal.
Petroleum-derived waste is highly susceptible to contamination by anaerobic bacteria
resulting in the release of noxious and volatile hydrogen sulphide and mercaptans.
Bio-Remediation is a preferred means of cleanup for soils containing organic pollutants
because it can provide a final solution through complete decomposition of the target
compounds to acceptable regulatory levels. Soil and its complex microbial community can
accept and degrade, to some degree, a variety of petroleum-based pollutants into non-toxic
forms.
There exists in nature microbial forms (i.e. bacteria,
fungi, yeast, molds, etc) which biodegrade many petroleum-based agents, which are noxious
to the environment. These microbes produce extracellular enzymes, which lead to the
breakdown, or mineralisation, of petroleum compounds, transforming them into food sources
for use of the microbes in growth and reproduction. This process continues until all that
remains is carbon dioxide, water, and biomass (fatty acids which are used as a good feed
source by other microorganisms).
To date, Bio-Remediation has worked on the basis of
microbes in the soil or water, which break down the long hydrocarbon molecular chains.
Either specific lab-cultured microbes are introduced, or the indigenous bacterial colonies
are provided nutrients and oxygen to increase their population, or both methods are
employed.
The problem is that bacteria cannot easily digest the long
hydrocarbon molecules. The molecules must penetrate two barriers the cell wall of
the bacteria, then the inner cytoplasmic membrane prior to contacting the
multi-enzyme complex within, and breaking down into easily digestible fatty acids.
Normally, this process typically takes one to five years, depending on the complexity of
the hydrocarbon It is these enzymatic compounds within the bacteria cell that actually
oxidize the hydrocarbons.
THE SANJIBAN BIO-REMEDIATION PROCESS
Sanjiban MicroActive has a two-part action in the petroleum matrix, simultaneous and
synergistic: on the one hand to create an aerobic environment by producing large
quantities of dissolved oxygen at a molecular level to increase microbial population, and
on the other hand breaking down the long hydrocarbon molecular chains to digestible fatty
acids, carbon dioxide and water. MicroActive enzymes efficiently activate oxygen and
convert it to a form in which the oxygen atom can be incorporated directly into the
hydrocarbon compound, thus breaking the long- chain bonds. The hydrocarbon is then broken
down to the corresponding alcohol, aldehyde, and finally to the monobasic fatty acids as
this process repeats.
The indigenous bacterial population then readily digests
these simple hydrocarbons. Once the reaction is completed, the enzyme breaks free to
attach to another hydrocarbon source in order to repeat the same reaction. This is often
referred to as the " lock and key" in that it is used many times. To further
enhance and accelerate the bio-remediation process, specific lab-cultured bacteria
customized to the specific hydrocarbon contaminant, may need be introduced into the waste
degradation process, along with application of Sanjiban MicroActive. Additionally,
SANJIBAN AQUAHUMUS, a balanced liquid microbial nutrient package, will enhance microbial
effectivity. AquaHumus is a source of macronutrients, complexed with biotically digested
organic complexes. It increases carbon and oxygen ratios by producing carbon and oxygen
bonds in the soil and aqueous environments. Sanjiban AquaHumus also assists in microbial
bonding to petroleum products, thus limiting volatilisation and enhancing degradation of
petroleum hydrocarbons.
The Sanjiban Bio-Remediation Process uses a customized
powerful enzymatic catalytic action to cleave the short-, long-, and branched-chain
hydrocarbons and the hydrogen sulphide bonds of toxic compounds of hydrocarbon wastes,
preventing their formation and eliminating odours. The remedial action effectively
prevents volatilization of light-chain organic molecules such as benzene, toluene and
xylenes and is also effective against recalcitrant compounds such as polynuclear
aromatics (creosote) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). Several unique properties of
the Sanjiban Bio-Remediation Process enhance penetration into the soil and the petroleum
matrix. MicroActive acts as a bio-surfactant making hydrocarbons more soluble and
"digestible". Thus heavier long-chained hydrocarbons are cleaved into shorter-
chain lighter fractions. This action reduces the surface tension and viscosity of most
residues, including sludge, allowing easier handling capabilities.
As MicroActive is equally effective in acidic conditions,
it breaks down the clay lattice in soils, diffusing rapidly through its pores, allowing
the complex of enzymes easier access to the contaminants.
APPLICATION METHOD AND DOSAGE Pilot
studies are required to be conducted to assess the precise dosage of Sanjiban MicroActive
and AquaHumus needed in hydrocarbon contaminated sites. Additionally, specific microbial
cultures, customised to the hydrocarbon contaminant will also be required to effectively
accelerate the bio-remediation process.
Bio-venting to increase aeration at soil depths may need to
be considered.
